Open Question: Having second thoughts about moving to nz?

currently living in pretoria, south africa. Would like to get away from the crime, corruption and the black government. new zealand is a place that my wife and i are seriously considering for our young son. however after reading some of the stories of nz news, i am somewhat put off. murders every couple of days, armed robberies left right and centre. people getting stabbed, attempted abductions, pack rapes! this is the stuff we are trying to escape from! i would LOVE to live in nz but is crime as bad as the news makes it out to be? it would be better than here but how much better? any south africans living there? would we be better off in australia....
