Open Question: Help choosing a transmission for 400+HP chevy?

8 September 2010, 11:45 am

Hi all - ive been trying to get some info on what tranny to look for for my street build. It will be a low-mid rpm street car with +- 435HP from a chevy 350.. (that i would like to take away on the open road now and then)... Not too sure about diff - maybe 3.75 for low end?? anyway - ive read so many different opinions its hard! manual vs automatic? ive heard the 700R4's are pretty bad stock? im quite comfortable driving either manual or auto - i just dont really want to loose low end power with an auto if thats the case? if an auto can really pull the seat fwd properly i wouldn't mind! Also - it seems setting an auto is alot more complex than a manual... and whats the stall converter? does it affect pull away whether its @ 1500 or say 2500 rpm? whats the recommended for a 5500-6000 rpm low-hi rpm car? whats gonna give me better economy long road? ive heard more gears = more economy..(5 spd manual vs auto overdrive?) so a manual would make sense? Im going to ask alot of people and hopefully get an accurate idea: and what about upgrading the components of the gearboxes? ive seen a few seller on ebay that upgrade components on trannies - is that necessary for my power load? or can i manage with a stock model (perhaps refurbished), yes - i dont have bucks to throw around which makes it all the more exciting! Im in south africa so might find a 2/3 ton GM truck tranny and throw that in!! could that work?? sure there a couple here - Hi all - thanks for the incredible feedback! its truly cool to hear form guys who know their thing! nothing worse than a 4 liner (no offense) - my car is a ford cortina 1973 XLE - a beautiful car and one of the sexiest available here in South Africa. 4 door but gr8 design! yes i want puling power (im putting every buck i have into this!) - and yeah, automatic is really pleasant to drive! I guess compensating for the auto power with the diff ratio is an option - i would somehow prefer auto, even though ive been driving on the roads since i was 13 and handle anything u throw at me, gears or not.. will be a tough choice! so it seems my manual options are limited compared to auto options? would u guys recommend a stock 200 for starters then? or i could hunt down a 4L80E and get the aftermarket electronics to go? id like a manual recommendation and an auto one that's not gonna break the bank? Once again thanks all, really - ive been wrestling with the tranny issue for some time now! :)... Read More »
