Crime wave continues in Jeffreys Bay

Despite a slow down in the number of house breakings in Jeffreys Bay, the Police had their hands full this past weekend with criminals targeting all suburbs of the town.

There were two reported house breakings in Wavecrest and a bakkie was stolen from Waterkant Street.  According to Superindendent Ntasbo, the bakkie is probably on its way to the East London area.  “A kombi that was stolen in Jeffreys Bay recently was found abandoned near East London after it had been used in an armed robbery” said Ntsabo.

Aston By after experiencing a few weeks of relative calm had a house break and entry was gained by forcing burglar bars open.  The CBD, Pellsrus/Ocean View and C Place were again the targets of robbers and a car was also broken into in C Place.  The Police arrested a suspect in connection with a robbery in Jeffreys Bay Central but as he was 14 years of age, he had to be released.

Arrests were also made for a house breaking in Ocean View.  Somalians were linked to this robbery and information that the Community Police Forum (CPF) obtained indicates that Somalians are buying stolen goods and either reselling them, or shipping the stolen goods out of the country.  The Jeffreys Bay Police have made it quite clear that anybody in possession of stolen goods will be charged and arrested.

The CPF is making progress with objecting to the granting of bail for those suspected of serious crime.  The recent case where a murder suspect was released on bail of R 2000 has angered the community in Jeffreys Bay.  Perlemoen poachers are being granted bail of R 20 000 but murder suspects get bail of R 2000.  This just does not make sense at all.  A meeting with the Justice Department has been arranged for Wednesday, where the matter will be taken up.

Analysis indicates that the crime patterns have again shifted to the early morning hours.  Residents are encouraged not to be negligent and make themselves targets for opportunistic criminals.

The CPF in conjunction with the Police raided the Supertubes Park last week in an ongoing attempt to ensure that no loiterers are using the Park as a base to commit crimes.  Other bushy areas in Wavecrest were also searched during the operation.
